The nerve

I made a quick trip to the grocery store today, and as I was checking out, the lady behind me decided to voice her opinion about my purchases. She said "You don't really think you need those chocolate chips, do you? Don't you think you could do without them?" PAUSE. What do you say to that? I don't think I look like I can't afford to eat a few chocolate chips. I mean, maybe people that know me really well might notice a slight chub right around the area where I am CARRYING A BABY, for goodness sakes! So I just said, "No, I think I DO need these chocolate chips." (smile) And then to thoroughly freak her out, I decided to tell her why I was buying them. "You see, I make these delicious sandwiches from brie, basil, and chocolate chips on sourdough bread." She replies with, "Cheese and chocolate chips?! Well that is fattening." Uh! I carefully placed my prenatal vitamins in plain view as if to say, "Yes, I do need these chocolate chips if I want to be able to make it through the day!" Wes did not like hearing this story. He was maddened by the nerve of that lady.

Crazy ladies aside, these sandwiches, courtesy of Giada on the Food Network, are delicioso! If you have the nerve to try an interesting combination, these sammies are the ones to start with. The flavor combos are essential, so no substitutions/eliminations will work. You need the olive oil and chocolate to balance the sourdough, and the brie to compliment the basil. Then grill them up in a panini maker (aka George Forman Grill), and enjoy! Here is the recipe (for a single sandwich):

Panini with Chocolate, Basil, and Brie

2 slices sourdough bread (I prefer the more rustic variety with little holes in it—not too dense)
Olive Oil (for the bread)
A few slices Brie cheese, thinly sliced
Small handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks
Small handful of chopped fresh basil leaves

Preheat the grill.

Drizzle both sides of the bread with olive oil. Place slices of cheese on 1 slice of bread (the bottom half), top the cheese with chocolate chips and a sprinkle of basil. Top with another slice of bread. Place the sandwich on the the grill, and cook until the chocolate begins to melt, and the bread is golden brown. (I am sure you could grill these on your stove top in a pan if you don't own a grill that closes.)

Cut the sandwich in half and enjoy!

**OK, I know you aren't supposed to eat Brie (or soft cheese with a rind) when pregnant. But guess what? If they are heated all the way through (melted), they are fair (and delicious) game!

Oh my goodness I can't believe she had the nerve. I have heard of people maybe joking about a purchase, but being negative that is uncalled for. I hope you enjoyed that sandwich with all your heart lol =)

This is an instance where it is okay to practice your karate in public. I'm sure everyone around you would applaud.

I second the roundhouse kick to the neck. And that lady is just jealous - cause she wants chocolate chips. What I would have said to her wouldn't be fit for a public forum. :)

WHAT! I've never heard of such a thing! What was she buying? You should have told her she forgot to pick up some TACT or manners! I am wracking my brain trying to think of a reason anyone would say that, even to a definately overweight person, let a lone someone as definately skinny as you. weird. Some people are just bizzare. I have to say I'm not craving those sandwiches but they look pretty! (and I certainly don't need the chocolate or cheese right now anyways :))
